History
In 1986, the American Gold Eagle Coin program was established by the United States as a timeless bullion coin. President Ronald Reagan signed the law, authorized by Congress, which quickly set a worldwide standard for bullion that is impressively artistic, highly collectible, and unmistakably American.
The U.S. Mint introduced the 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin in 1986 and has since produced a new one annually following the enactment of the Gold Bullion Act of 1985. Initially, the Gold Eagle coin held a $10 value and served as the basis for the face-value unit of other gold coins, such as the Double Eagle and Half Eagle.
Many consider the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin, which was the last Double Eagle design and circulated until 1933, as the most exquisite coin design ever made. The modern Gold Eagle coins that are available for purchase take inspiration from this 1907 gold coin.
Design
Derived from Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ renowned 1907 Gold Double Eagle design, the 1 oz gold eagle coin showcases Lady Liberty in full length, with cascading hair and a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in the other. On the reverse side, Miley Busiek’s creation exhibits a bald eagle in flight, carrying an olive branch to his nest occupied by a female eagle and her offspring.
This 1 oz American Eagle gold coin design symbolizes the might and significance of American households.
